Electromyography

Preparing for your EMG with Dr. Rohrs


  1. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to our scheduled appointment time.

  2. DO NOT use lotions, oils, creams on your skin for at least 24 hours prior to the test as this can affect the results.

  3. What to wear:

    1. Upper Extremity Study-Top that can expose your shoulder

    2. Lower Extremity Study-Shorts that can expose your mid-thigh

    3. (you may bring extra clothing to change into)

  4. What to expect:

    1. NCS-Nerve conduction studies-For this test, a small electrical shock is applied to the nerve and the recording shows how the nerve is functioning. These shocks cause a quick, mild, tingling feeling.

    2. EMG-Needle Electromyography-For this test, a small thin pin is inserted into several muscles to see if there are any problems. It is used once for each patient and is thrown away after the test.

  5. The test usually takes between 20 to 90 minutes. You may also resume normal activities after the tests.

  6. Your test results will be reviewed with you by your referring provider at your follow up
